Domaine Alphonse Mellot
Alphonse Mellot is a name in the wine world, recognised for perfection both in'the vineyard and in the cellar, The team combination of the father, with his knowledge and his respect for the vineyald, and me son, who joined several years aga bringing bis dynamism, belief and conviction, produces a high level of precision. Rarely have father and son been so complementary where detail is concemed. Their shared sense of precise craftsmanship guides each and every step of meir winemaking. The result is no coïncidence, but stems from a massive amount of workcarried out in the vines. Pruning, de-budding, and waking the soil have all contributed towards this overall quality policy. And one shouldn't forget the financial side of these numerous and expensive operations. The harvest is 100% hand-picked, in 25-kilo bins which are very rare in this region. Selection is carried out both in the vines and in the winery : the resulting cost is enormous.
Our tasting of the 1999 vintage confirms the consistency of this winery both in whites and reds. The latter have both depth and style, and show all the care they have received. But will this terrific amount of work be understood by the consumer? Will he be prepared to pay the due price for a bottle of Sancerre ? This remains to be seen. One thing is for sure : Sancerre, at this level,is gorgeous.
RED
A clear ruby colour, with a delicate, precise nose of lovely pinot noir, with all its freshness and expressiveness. The palate is straightforward, medium-bodied, with good balance and an attractive elegance.
CUVEE EDMOND, WHITE
The nose shows good maturity, with superb aromas of yellowfruit and well integrated wood. Its mineral freshness produces depth and elegance. On the palate, it is rich and full, with attractive volume, and it manages to be both powerful and balanced, with a very good persistence.
CUVEE GENERATION, WHITE
This wine has a nose of citrus and exotic fruit, with elegant and well integrated wood with an aromatic palette. On tasting it shows superb fullness. Its volume and strength mark a wine made for laying-down. Great freshness throughout.
LA MOUSSIERE, WHITE
It displays a palette of aromas : a nose of fresh citrus fruit (grapefruit) reveals a minerai, floral freshness. On the palate this elegant, racy wine is clean and balanced with a medium weight structure.
